Comment on "Constant Stress and Pressure Rheology of Colloidal Suspensions".

In a recent Letter, Wang and Brady (WB) [1] analyze the rheology of Brownian hard spheres using constant stress and pressure Brownian dynamics simulations. The main observable is the shear viscosity ηð_ γ;ΠÞ, expressed as a function of the shear rate _ γ and adimensional pressure Π̄ 1⁄4 Πa=ðkBTÞ, where Π is the pressure, kBT the thermal energy, and a the average particle diameter. The central co...

Constant Stress and Pressure Rheology of Colloidal Suspensions.

We study the constant stress and pressure rheology of dense hard-sphere colloidal suspensions using Brownian dynamics simulation. Expressing the flow behavior in terms of the friction coefficient-the ratio of shear to normal stress-reveals a shear arrest point from the collapse of the rheological data in the non-Brownian limit. The flow curves agree quantitatively (when scaled) with the experim...

Rheology dynamics of aggregating colloidal suspensions.

We study a colloidal model based on population balances in the context of complex fluid rheology. Two typical particle microstructure kinetics, orthokinetic, collisions due to shear, and perikinetic, collisions due to Brownian motion, are found to appear at continuum as different flow behaviors - those having monotonic and non-monotonic flow curves, respectively. Solving the colloidal model tog...

Theory of nonlinear rheology and yielding of dense colloidal suspensions.

A first-principles approach to the nonlinear flow of dense suspensions is presented which captures shear thinning of colloidal fluids and dynamical yielding of colloidal glasses. The advection of density fluctuations plays a central role, suppressing the caging of particles and speeding up structural relaxation. A mode coupling approach is developed to explore these effects.

Connecting nanoscale motion and rheology of gel-forming colloidal suspensions.

We report a combined x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and rheometry study of moderately concentrated suspensions of silica colloids that form a gel on cooling. During gel formation, the suspensions acquire a shear modulus that increases with time, while the thermal motion of the colloids becomes localized over an increasingly restricted range. The nanometer-scale localization length charac...
